Interior architect Samuli Naamanka (born 1969) is known as a versatile designer whose work combines carefully considered vocabulary of form with creative technical innovations. Naamanka specializes in environmental design, as well as in product, exhibition and interior design. He has carried out groundbreaking work in developing patented techniques for concrete patterning and coloring. More recently his research work has concentrated on developing biodegradable composite materials.

Naamanka's awarded environmental designs and public works of art contain references to the history, nature and architecture of the places they are located at. His product designs include the prize-winning Biodegradable Roll lampshade concept and Clash and Uni chairs, the former manufactured by Martela, the latter by Avarte. In 2005, Samuli Naamanka was named the Furniture Designer of the Year by the Finnish Association of Interior Architects.

COMPOS for PIIROINEN
The innovative COMPOS lobby chair is designed especially for public spaces with ergonomics, durability, and easy cleaning in mind. The traditionally high criteria for contract furniture are combined with consideration for the environment. The seat is produced of 100% biodegradable linen based natural composite fiber and the steel frame is eco-chrome plated, with a shiny or matt finish. The seat can be recycled, or discarded by burning or by industrially composing it in about 80 days. The composite material does not contain any oil-based and/or non-organic binding substances. The frame on the other hand can be reused as raw material for the production of stainless steel. The COMPOS collection currently includes two chairs and a table.

Tomoto for Plastex
The Tomoto tableware set launched in Tokyo in fall 2010 includes three different sized bowls and lids made of innovative 100% bio based composite material. The Tomoto bowls and their multifunctional lids represent a new way of serving food. The ingenious design allows the user to put the soup in the bowl, cover the bowl with the lid to keep it warm, and at the same time use the lid as a plate for tapas or salad. Samuli Naamanka has captured the Finnish spirit at its best with the Tomoto set: no clutter, just a chic, simple, environmentally friendly design. The Tomotos are affordable high-end products.
